The rise of Icelandic aquaculture visualized

Over the past decade, Iceland has impressively worked its way into a strong position in the Nordic aquaculture industry

  • Since 2015, salmon exports have risen from 2.000 to over 45.000 tonnes
  • Over the past year, the biggest Icelandic aquaculture export markets were the US, the Netherlands, France, China, and Denmark
  • Icelandic salmon faces a global average tariff of 7.05% compared to 6.3%, 9.6%, and 7.09% for Chile, the Faroes, and Norway respectively. (tariff data calculated from around 80 countries for the categories: whole fresh, whole frozen, fillet fresh, fillet frozen, other frozen, smoked, and prepared)
  • In value, salmon (83%) and trout (13%) were the biggest aquaculture species in Iceland in the past year
  • Prices declined in 2025, and the annual salmon price in the US for Icelandic whole fresh was around 7€ compared to 7.5€ for Norway and the Faroes.
